Forces: REME
William P-S
"What I appreciate the most in this role, is that I am trusted, respected, given appropriate responsibilities from the start, whilst feeling fully supported by experienced and ‘real’ management. We are all individuals, wanting to do a good job and help the company and more importantly, ourselves grow."
William Pearson-Smith left the Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers
after serving six years. Through having a strong sense of what was
important as part of his resettlement process for the next stage in his
life, Will sought out the role of Trainee Structures Examiner at Inspire
(Structures) Ltd, and has continued to thrive.
"Part of leaving
the REME was to ensure more of a work life balance, and to be based
predominately back in Yorkshire. However, I also wanted to ensure that I
could use the skills I had gained over the last six years, at the same
time as trying to re-achieve my aspiration of being a structural
engineer. Inspire (Structures) Ltd gave me all of that and so much more,
with the guidance of CTP workshops, I felt prepared to embark on this
new challenge.
"The role of a Trainee Structures Examiner means
that I am out and about, carrying out site examinations of structures
(mainly culverts within the Network Rail environment), compiling
reports, and carrying out risk assessments. In many ways, this was a
daunting prospect at the start, but due to the professionalism and
personal approach that Inspire adopt with all colleagues I have been
fully supported and trained. I soon realised that the skills that I had
learnt within REME, such as adaptability, thinking on your feet, being
organised, and planning for all eventualities were crucial.
"The
actual technical training was mainly on the job, and due to being used
to learning new skills when becoming an Electronics Technician, this was
not over-whelming. The principles of engineering are transferable and
allow you to hit the ground running. Everyone within the company
started at my level, so no question was a silly one, and everyone could
share their experiences. There is also a clear career progression,
within this young and motivational company – which is important to me.
"What
I appreciate the most in this role, is that I am trusted, respected,
given appropriate responsibilities from the start, whilst feeling fully
supported by experienced and ‘real’ management. We are all individuals,
wanting to do a good job and help the company and more importantly,
ourselves grow."
