Forces: Ex-Army
Tam C - Major
"At interview; be yourself, sell yourself and don’t underestimate the skills, qualities and experience that you can offer a potential employer, regardless of time served in HM Forces.”
Ex-Major Tam C served for 30 years in the Army, with his most
recent role as Contract Monitoring Officer at the Army Foundation
College, Harrogate.
Tam says, “I took all the resettlement opportunities advised to me;
Career Consultant, CTP RightJob and I arranged an interview with a local
Employment Consultant. I also attended a job fair, which was very
useful, and the combination of all these helped me gain employment.”
Of his experience at the three day Career Transition Workshop he says,
“I found all of it very helpful and the knowledge and information
received was very useful. The CV development was particularly
interesting as having served so long in the Army I wasn’t familiar with
this. The link to RightJob is fantastic and gave me reassurance that I
could make the transition, as there were opportunities available.
“By developing my myPlan profile and having a plan meant it confirmed
what skills, qualities and qualifications I had to offer any potential
employer. I did refer to them from time to time and by having them
readily available they were in my mind which helped during interview.”
Tam now works as Buildings and Contract Manager, Fife College and is
responsible for managing a property and maintenance team of 30 people
spread across 3 main sites. He says, “The skills I use regularly and I
see me using whilst in this job are; management, leadership,
communication and flexibility. The qualifications that I gained in the
Army and I will use in the job are; health and safety, facilities
management, Quartermaster, and my experience at final assignment working
in a PFI environment.”
Tam’s advice to other Service leavers is, “Attend all workshops and
training days available to you and complete courses to help secure
employment in the area of choice. At interview; be yourself, sell
yourself and don’t underestimate the skills, qualities and experience
that you can offer a potential employer, regardless of time served in HM
Forces.”
