Steve C - CPO
"My route to the super yacht industry started following a CTP Career Transition Workshop at HMS Nelson in Portsmouth..."
Ex-Chief Petty Officer Steve Campbell served for 23 years,
specialising in Electrical Engineering within the submarine service.
Having left in 2015 to embark upon a new career, he is now a successful
Super Yacht Engineer and hasn’t looked back since. Here, Steve tells us
about his career transition...Did you find your skills from the Navy transferrable?
"I
now work as a 2nd Engineer on a Motor Yacht in the superyacht industry,
a role which is varied and one I find very enjoyable. I am thankful for
the life experience and skills that I obtained whilst serving within
the Royal Navy which put me in good stead to embark on a new maritime
career."
How did you get your job and what was the interview/selection process like?
"My
route to the super yacht industry started following a CTP Career
Transition Workshop at HMS Nelson in Portsmouth. I attended a seminar
given by YPI Crew, a yacht placement company. This seminar was very
informative and explained in detail the route that I had to take to
obtain employment within the industry. They took time to answer any
questions and were happy to speak to me on a one to one basis. At the
end of the seminar I was hooked!"
Did you need to do further training/courses to join the Super Yacht Industry?
"I
researched the specific route and applied through the MCA for my
qualifications. It took many months of study, carrying out additional
courses and a final oral board to finally become eligible to apply for
positions.
"YPI Crew set me off on my adventure and assisted me
every step of the way. The professionalism from Jacqui at YPI Crew and
her team was outstanding and thorough. I would highly recommend YPI Crew
to anyone considering this industry.”
