Resettlement success

Forces: Army

Nathan H - LCpl

"Start networking early. Take time to go to events and meet people."

Nathan Humphries served for 7 years in the Army as a Lance Corporal, specialising as a Communication Systems Operator. He now works as an IT Service Desk Analyst for the Metropolitan Police Service.

Whilst Nathan really enjoyed all opportunities he was given to develop his basic soldiering skills and representing his Corps in sports, the key factor for leaving was to have a new challenge and progress his technical career. During his service with the Army, Nathan gained numerous IT technical qualifications and leadership training, which have become invaluable and easily transferable to civilian life.

Unfortunately, due to military commitments leading up to his discharge date, Nathan was not able to take advantage of any CTP resettlement courses or workshop. While unable to use CTP’s services, Nathan attended a CompTIA A+ and N+ with Bluescreen IT Ltd in his last two months of service. Nathan commented, “The instructors on the courses were excellent.”

Nathan is currently employed in the Metropolitan Police Service as an IT Service Desk Analyst. He has found the company an excellent place to work for with a lot of opportunities to develop qualifications and careers. Nathan states, “My job entails communication with users to help resolve or progress any IT related issues they may be having. My IT skills gained during my time in the Army have helped me endlessly.”

Transitioning from the military to ‘Civvy Street’ can be daunting, Nathan’s only obstacle was adjusting to the civilian way of life, which he describes as ‘… harder than I thought it would be.” However, his line manager and colleagues have been fantastic at supporting him and has enabled him to settle into work.

Nathan’s final advice for Service leavers is, “To start networking early. Take time to go to events and meet people. I also found LinkedIn was really good for this too.”
