Resettlement success
Forces: Royal Navy
Mathew J
"Give the yacht industry a shot, it might sound the same as the jobs that are done day-to-day within the Royal Navy but without the experience of working on board a yacht you will never know how good it really is."
After serving in the Royal Navy for 7 years, Mathew Jurczykowski left
in 2015. With YPI crew’s guidance, he was given a position on MV
Seawolf, a 58 metre Super Yacht as the 3rd engineer. What were your main reasons for leaving the Service?
"I
left the Royal Navy to further develop myself and my career. After
serving 7 years I felt like I needed a change from the military
lifestyle."
What attracted you to a career in the Super Yacht Industry?
"I
was lucky enough to know people who had already began their careers in
the yachting industry, so I had a good idea what it was all about
without actually having worked there. For me, being able the go to some
of the most remote places in the world and meeting new people with
different cultures were the big attractions."
What transferable skills did you have from the Navy?
"During
my time with the Royal Navy, I had completed LETQC, a leading hand
leadership course and Intermediate Sea Safety Course (ISSC). These
qualifications and the experiences gained from the courses have helped
me in my role to date."
How did you get your job and what was the interview/selection process like?
"I
was advised to contact YPI Crew by my CTP Career Consultant and they
helped me with exactly what I needed to be able to get my first
position. They kept in touch whilst I progressed with my courses and
once they had been completed and we amended my CV to be presentable for
yachting, YPI Crew put me forward for vacant positions.
I was
then contacted for telephone interviews and got my first permanent
position on board MV Seawolf (world travelling charter yacht) as 3rd
Engineer."
What was the biggest thing you’ve learned from leaving the Navy and now working on board Super Yachts?
"Compared
to the Royal Navy, you are given a lot more responsibility as there are
less engineers maintaining the boats and it is more of a lifestyle than
a job."
What advice would you give to other Service leavers who are considering a long-term career in the Super Yacht Industry?
"Give
the yacht industry a shot, it might sound the same as the jobs that are
done day-to-day within the Royal Navy but without the experience of
working on board a yacht you will never know how good it really is."
What are the best things about being a Super Yacht Engineer/working on-board Super Yachts?
"Traveling
to the most desired and remote locations in the world whilst earning an
excellent wage as you go and learning new cultures and languages from
people with different nationalities."
