Forces: Ex-Royal Navy

Martyn R - Lieutenant Commander Observer

“Use your Graduated Resettlement Time wisely to attend as many courses as possible and/or civilian workplace attachments.”

Background
Martyn served 21 years with the Royal Navy and reached the rank of Lieutenant Commander as a Maritime Helicopter Observer. His main reason for leaving was his desire for a second career.

His experience and training in man-management, instructional techniques and technical training are proving useful in civilian life. Martyn was also very fortunate to gain an MSc in Aerospace Systems and attended several IT, computer and management courses, which he has also found to be very transferrable to industry.

Resettlement
Martyn attended an Officers’ Career Transition Workshop (CTW) approximately ten months before discharge. He found it very useful, although certain aspects were challenging, such as the advice not to play down what he had achieved during his military service.

He also attended the Business Start Up and Management Consultancy workshops and undertook CTP vocational training, including Accounting for Managers, APMP and the NEBOSH Construction Certificate.

His verdict? “All courses and workshops I attended were well run and interesting. I had intended to return to Civil Engineering, using the Project Management and H&S courses as a route back in. Although I subsequently opted to work in the Defence Aviation industry, the courses were interesting and provided me with further management knowledge.”

Outcome
After discharge, Martyn secured employment as an Electronic Warfare Officer through networking. He operates a variety of avionics and electronic equipment while airborne in a Falcon 20 jet, as well as being involved with providing training for RN and RAF units during work-up exercises.
