Forces: RAF
Carl S
“Being from the Infantry, I gained a little construction knowledge through my career but what I did gain is the ability to manage people and projects to a high level and to communicate with contractors and stakeholders at all levels, which I’ve found to be most useful. The military also instils a strong work ethic, so the job gets done regardless of the amount of time and effort it takes.”
CarillionAmey
Recruiting people who have served in the Armed
Forces is something we are passionate about. Service leavers have
unrivalled experience in areas such as leadership, self-discipline and
problem solving and are used to working as part of a team in highly
pressurised environments, and we’re really keen to learn from them to
improve the service we provide to our customers.
We have a target
to ensure that 10% of our workforce come from a Service background and
we’re proud to have exceeded this target, with 11% of our staff
currently having links with the Armed Forces.
Carl Shadrake
Carl
Shadrake is a perfect example of our drive to recruit Service leavers;
having recently joined our Regional Prime South East (RPSE) team as a
Delivery Manager at RAF Benson, he is already bringing some of the
skills and experience he gained from 14 years in the Grenadier Guards,
to his new role.
Carl is a twice wounded Veteran, having served
in Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan along with many training overseas
exercises in Canada, Kenya and Germany. During his first tour of
Afghanistan in 2007, he was wounded by a suicide bomber and this
resulted in a four month stay at Headley Court, the home of the Defence
Medical Rehabilitation Centre (DMRC) in Surrey, a site we are proud to
support as part of our contract to deliver maintenance services in RPSE.
Carl
was medically discharged in 2014, and after months of physical
rehabilitation, Carl embarked on a number of professional courses such
as NEBOSH (health and safety) and tradesman qualifications. He always
had a passion for property development and was delighted when he was
offered a role within our business.
“I
started with CarillionAmey almost four months ago and have integrated
into the CA and DIO teams very well. I also have a great working
relationship with the Station Infra team. My role is quite varied and I
have been handed the responsibility of running the Change Management
System (CMS) tasks at RAF Benson and helping out across the whole of the
Service Delivery Area (SDA) 21.”Carl is passionate
about providing an excellent service to the Armed Forces. Having lived
in military barracks and Service Family Accommodation during his 14 year
career himself, he understands the needs and wants of the soldiers and
families that live on the MOD estate. He is also seeing the benefits his
military background is bringing to his role as a Delivery Manager.
