"Do not be afraid of trying something new. You may go through a few jobs before you find the right one."
Andrew Morris spent four-years as a Sapper in the Royal Engineers
before deciding to look for other opportunities and a new challenge.
During his service he gained a HGV licence, which has helped him secure
employment with Morrisons as a driver. Here, Andrew tells his story."I
was initially worried when I left the Army as I wasn't sure what to do
with myself. I tried different jobs such as bar work, working in an
airport, aircraft engineering, and even tried going to university,
however, I couldn't settle any longer than a few months in each of these
jobs.
"In 2013, I applied for a job as a HGV Driver with
Morrisons via their company website and was invited for a friendly
interview. I was delighted when I was offered the position and am
happily settled into the position.
"The driving role appealed to
me as I liked working as part of a team while having the time to work
by myself. At the moment I work nights and enjoy the daily challenge of
navigating around London's road network.
"From my time in the
Army, I knew I couldn't do a job where I would be sat in a building all
day. This job means I get to travel to different places every night, and
no two nights are the same!
"I would highly recommend Morrisons
for Service leavers, there are many ex-Forces employees who enjoy their
roles. This role is extremely family-friendly for me. I have a young son
and I cannot think of many other jobs where it would be possible to
spend as much time with him as I do now. Morrisons is helping to ensure
that I do not miss out on him growing up.
"My advice to Service
leavers currently going through the process of leaving the military
would be to not be afraid of trying something new. You may go through a
few jobs before you find the right one."
