From Royal Navy Warfare Officer to Wealth Manager

Category: Success Stories Publish date: 06/03/2020

From Royal Navy Warfare Officer to Wealth Manager I found the AFH wealth Management Training role advertised on the CTP website. The interview process included initial Psychometric Tests to determine behavior characteristics before coming to the office for a formal interview. This was more focused on my competencies and skills that I had accumulated over the years and how I thought these would be relevant. It was formal but relaxed, and allowed me the opportunity to go into as much detail as required.

I am now on a 12 month rotation where I change between departments so that I can learn the processes that are in place within the business, as well as having to study for exams. The work ethic, communication and teamwork skills that were enhanced in the military have been valuable in my role. It is hard work but enjoyable with a friendly team who are happy to answer questions.

Going back to an office environment was strange initially, but with the team here I soon found my feet. Getting used to a new role and company whilst having to study for exams is tough (as is to be expected), so the learning curve is steep. Anyone in the Forces will have encountered this at some point in their military career so it shouldn’t be too much of an obstacle.

Ensure you plan your departure properly and do not give up on a role or company that you want to work for. There will be long days where you feel as though you are treading water and not getting anywhere, but don’t be afraid to pick up the phone to potential employers or your CTP Consultant and discuss your credentials and whether you are suitable for an advertised role.

Utilise your network to find people in the industry/role that you want to get into to ensure that you are fully aware of what will be required of you. Speak to Ex-Forces employees if you can, as they’re normally very happy to help, having gone through the process themselves.

Research the role, company and qualification requirements properly so that in an interview you come across well prepared and knowledgeable. If you don’t know an answer, say so, do not try and “blag” it. At the end of every interview I was asked “Do you have any questions for us?” - Prepare for this in advance by having a couple of questions to hand as it shows your interest.
