Not all heroes wear capes or berets, some wear hard hats and boots! Are you looking for new opportunities? Do you want to work in an environment that values the voices of its people? And would you like to be part of a diverse culture that promotes and celebrates inclusivity?

Working at Ringway means working with truly great people who support each other through teamwork and respect. We invest in recruiting and developing local people, meaning our teams are proud of the work they deliver and are committed to improving their local communities.

Why Service leavers thrive with us

Skills gained in the military are extremely transferable and will help you integrate into the construction industry regardless of which role you decide to apply for.

Your existing skillset will be hugely valuable as you’ll:

  • Be involved with solving problems whilst working at a fast pace
  • Be disciplined, reliable and driven
  • Have a strong sense of team working, camaraderie and leadership
  • Possess technical, engineering or man-management skills which will further support your application.

We don’t limit your options. If you’re driven, demonstrate the skills needed and have a passion for the business, we’ll give you the support and opportunity to grow in terms of remit and responsibility. You’ll be rewarded for improving the way we work, and our focus on learning and development will ensure you can keep building on your knowledge and developing new skills throughout your career. Our approach to personal development is an effective mix of training courses and on-the-job learning.

We also appreciate that applying for roles after leaving the military requires serious thought and consideration, especially if it’s your first time applying for civilian roles. But you should take confidence from the fact that many people have gone from the military to Ringway and thrived here; and here are some simple steps you can take to make sure your application is as strong as possible:

Research your options - We recruit across the business. Each of these are quite different from one another and you should understand which one is right for you.

Think about the kind of role you want - In our application form we’ll ask you to specify what kind of environment you’d like to work in. Would you like to work outside or be office-based? Are you happy working shifts, or unusual hours?

Think carefully about your CV - There are a lot of helpful guides online. Tell us about your experience and think about the skills you have versus what it states within the role requirements.

Consider your skillset - You can make a decision about your role almost entirely based on your current skills, and you’ll be able to succeed even more quickly if you apply for a role that complements your skillset.

Hear from some of our employees based in Plymouth at our South West Highways Ltd Business Unit:

On career progression, support and longevity in the industry:

“I transitioned from the military into Ringway back in 2002 after spending 12 years in the Royal Navy. I started my career line-painting and installing cats-eyes; I’m now the Lining Supervisor for South West Highways Ltd Plymouth and couldn’t be happier with the development of my career within the construction industry.

"The experience has been extremely rewarding and I’m now progressing into scheme work such as drainage, kerbing, and footway reconstruction. The support from Ringway has been fantastic, and I feel like I can have a very long and industrious career within the company.”
- Darren Packham, Lining Supervisor, South West Highways

On transferable skills, engineering and structured organisation:

“I was in the Royal Engineers for 5½ years prior to employment within the construction industry, and I’m now a scheme supervisor for South West Highways Ltd Plymouth. I’ve found that the physicality of the job benefits both trades, and that having a transferable skillset is hugely beneficial in transitioning between the two industries.

"Coming in with a strong work ethic and structured approach to tasks plays to the specific strengths that the military instil into their employees. The attitude and structure of the military is akin to that of construction industry, especially for a maintenance contract operative role. The organisation, structure and planning are effervescent to the military and therefore makes Ringway an ideal fit for former-forces personnel. Ultimately, you get out of it what you put in.” – Steve Fedrick, Supervisor, South West Highways
