Civil Nuclear Constabulary are recruiting now! The Civil Nuclear Constabulary (CNC) is an armed police service dedicated to the nuclear industry. Our vision is to be recognised nationally and internationally as the United Kingdom’s leading organisation for the provision of protective policing for the civil nuclear industry and other critical national infrastructure. Given the critical nature of our work, it’s vital that we recruit skilled and committed professionals to our team.

Sellafield LTD is Europe's largest nuclear site, covering 6 square kilometres on the West Coast of Cumbria. Within its footprint there are more than 200 nuclear facilities, over 1000 buildings and over 12000 employees. Such a large and complex site requires the most comprehensive policing response in the CNC to keep the staff, facilities and local community safe and secure.

Police Constable role (Authorised Firearms Officer)

Our role in protecting the nation’s security is unique, which is why being a CNC Police Officer is about so much more than traditional policing.

You’ll become part of a highly trained, well-disciplined, and professional team working to provide 24/7 armed response; patrolling and protecting the Sellafield nuclear site, facilities and materials, as well as patrolling in the local community and working with local Home Office Police Forces. We also play a key role in the Strategic Armed Policing Reserve and have been deployed across the country as part of Operation Temperer in response to terrorist attacks and the state funeral for Her Majesty the Queen.

Upon joining the CNC you’ll be enrolled onto the Level Four Non-Home Office Police Officer apprenticeship. This is a two-year apprenticeship where the first 19 weeks will be a residential Initial Foundation Programme (IFP), which will include our world-class comprehensive Authorised Firearms training. We give our officers everything they need to become some of the most highly trained firearms professionals in the country, so there’s no need for you to have any prior policing experience when joining us.

At the end of the IFP you’ll be posted to Sellafield and, in the remaining 20 months as an operational Authorised Firearms Officer, you’ll complete a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate your policing ability. Towards the end of your apprenticeship, you’ll take an End Point Assessment. Upon successful completion of this you’ll be confirmed in rank as a Police Constable.

After your 2-year probationary period, you’ll be eligible to apply for a role in one of our specialist areas to enhance your policing skills further, such as Dog Handler, Special Branch, Firearms Instructor or Strategic Escort Group Officer.
As police officers, the public expect us to display the highest standards, values and professional qualities at all times. The CNC values and code of ethics applies to all police officers and sets out the principles and standards of behaviour that you’re responsible for demonstrating and delivering at all times.

Benefits

  • You’ll receive a starting salary of £28,551. Your salary will increase in yearly increments up to £46,044 within seven years.
  • You’ll work a four on/four off 12-hour shift pattern, considered one of the most desirable in the policing world.
  • Although overtime is available, you’ll start and finish at your allotted times so you can plan your personal life around your shifts.
  • 22 days (176 hours) per year annual leave, plus bank holidays.
  • Generous pension scheme (20.7% employer contribution).
  • Free parking at site.
  • Free gym at site and time during your shift to train.
  • Enhanced family friendly and wellbeing policies.
  • Cycle to Work scheme.
  • Officers and staff also have the opportunity to join the national Blue Light Card scheme, which offers discounts on a variety of products and services to those working in the emergency services, NHS, and Armed Forces.

Our ED&I focus

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion are central to the values of our organisation. At CNC we value and embrace the unique experiences, identities and abilities that each of us bring to our roles. We strive to empower everyone to bring their authentic self, openly and safely to work.

Through the dedicated commitment of our affinity networks, ED&I team and wider HR departments, we’re on a journey to embed our ED&I commitments throughout our organisation; ensuring the CNC is an employer of choice where everyone feels included.

Why join the CNC from the military

As a serving or retired member of the Armed Forces, you possess a wealth of desirable experience and skills, and are used to carrying out a vitally important role. But have you thought about entering the policing sphere as a warranted police officer and Authorised Firearms Officer (AFO) with the Civil Nuclear Constabulary?

We play a key role in counter terrorism and offer world-class firearms training to our officers. We can help you develop existing and acquire new skills, all in an environment you’ll be familiar with and while continuing to be an important part of protecting the country.

Civil Nuclear Constabulary has always had a close connection with our Armed Forces and we truly value the transferable skills and resilient work ethic Service leavers bring into policing. So much so, we’re very proud to be Silver Award holders in the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme.
