Aim of the Course 

This course provides an Introduction to Electrical Installation as a foundation for those wishing to move on to Electrical Installation, Full Scope or as a stand-alone for those wishing to gain a basic understanding or a CITB Defined Scope qualification. See introduction to this chapter for advice on which course is best for you.


Course Content 
The course provides an introduction to the Regulations, Electrical Theory, Electrical Safety, Instrumentation and Practical Installation.

Although the ‘Introduction to Electrical Installation’ course will take beginners you will be expected to reach Defined Scope Level within a very short space of time. For this you will need a reasonable aptitude for electrical engineering and be numerate to level 2.

You will also need to do the pre-learning before attending; this is supplied to you via access to City and Guild’s SmartScreen. The details for access to C&G SmartScreen will be included with Joining Instructions.

  • CITB Defined Scope (inc Building Regulations)
  • Joint Industry Board (JIB) Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS) Health & Safety Assessment
Please Note: The Defined Scope assessment will only be formally taken by prior arrangement with the RTC as most students then move on to the Full Scope course.

Employment Opportunities 
This course provides the foundation for those wishing to work in the electrical industry and further training will be necessary to gain sufficient qualifications to do so.

Further Details 
A calculator, coloured pens, page markers and highlighters will be required. Two passport sized photographs and your National Insurance Number are also necessary to register with CITB. Please see our introduction to this chapter for the recommended book list.

Students must purchase the required literature prior to starting this course.  A list of books required for each course will be provided. Books from the RTC can be purchased on the first morning of the course but if you wish to purchase prior to attendance they are also available from good bookshops or from the publications department of the IET (Tel No: 01438 767328).

Please note: Students without the required literature will be unable to complete the course.

If this is not possible or the alternative(s) is/are not acceptable to the Service leaver, Right Management, who deliver all non-contract courses listed, may refund in full the total amount paid to date for non-contract funded courses, or, in the case of MOD Contract Funded courses, in agreement with the MOD, the Service leavers IRTC grant will not be notionally reduced.
