Service leavers discover a wealth of opportunity in the Humber’s booming Energy sector

Back to News
In the heart of the Humber’s Energy Estuary, 63 Service leavers gathered to the 2nd annual Process, Energy, Engineering and Renewables Industry Awareness Day.
The Career Transition Partnership (CTP) event was hosted at the UK leading's industrial training facility HCF Catch.

Yvonne Day, Andrew Kofoed & Richard Rudd were the featured speakers at the event, all ex-military who have made a successful transition to senior level roles in their respected companies. Their presentations aimed to inspire Service leavers to consider the sector, and outlined the many great opportunities available within the industry.

Yvonne Day, ex-RAF, with a background in engineering and a HR Professional, shared some of the most common pitfalls that candidates encounter with their CVs and, more importantly, how to avoid them.

Being proactive, learning soft-skills and even doing voluntary work were the key attributes that gave Andrew Kofoed, ex-Navy, the opportunity to become a Project Engineer at Cristal Global, the world’s second largest Titanium Dioxide company.

One of the leading employers in the region is searching for new Trainee Refinery Process Operators. Richard Rudd of Philips 66 Humber Refinery explained the similarities and transferable skills between the military and working at an oil refinery.

Attendees also had the opportunity to network and meet representatives from leading companies within the sector, with employers including Cofely Fabricom, GDF Suez, BOC, ABP, All NRG, Siemens and Centrica in attendance.

The overall message of the day was that Service leaders are prime candidates for the renewables industry as they are experienced in highly pressurised situations, responsible, quick to learn, self-disciplined, process driven and ultimately have the personality traits to succeed.
