Attending A Virtual Employment Event – Hints and Tips! Have you booked your space on one of our Virtual Employment Events for 2021?

CTP Virtual Employment Events are a fantastic networking opportunity - whether you’re ready to apply for live jobs or are simply researching the job market. So how can you make the best use of your time and find out about all the opportunities which are available?

Preparation is key

  1. Do your research; see which companies interest you, and identify which ones are seeking someone with your skills. There will be lists of employers who have booked stands at the event listed on our events page.
  2. VE Events are not just for people who are looking for a job right now. They can be a great opportunity to do some research and help you think about what type of jobs you’re suited to, or what organisations you’d like to work for in the future.

What should you do to prepare?

  1. Have a notepad and pen ready to take notes.
  2. Have a digital copy of your CV to hand. Whilst we advise that any application made for a specific role is accompanied by a tailored CV for that vacancy, some employers at our fairs are happy to accept generic CVs from Service leavers on the day.
  3. Ensure you have a good internet connection, and use a laptop or desktop pc wherever possible.

I’m here – what next?

  1. We’d recommend reading through the event booklet before you log on and plan your approach – what companies do you want to speak to first? What information do you want to find out? Do you have any questions you need answering?
  2. Use the brochure to check which companies are attending, and remember there’s a CTP ERM on-hand to help you if you’re unable to enter one of the rooms.

Approaching employers

  1. Start with a smile and a greeting, introduce yourself.
  2. A good way of breaking the ice is to ask a general question such as:
    1. How large an organisation are you?
    2. Could you tell me a little bit about your business?
    3. What type of person and skills are you looking for?
  3. Be ready to briefly discuss your career goals, qualifications, work experience, extra-curricular activities and skill set.
  4. Ask for their email address or LinkedIn profile at the end of the discussion to connect with them after the event.
  5. Don’t forget this is a marketing opportunity, so try and highlight the relevant skills you have for the type of company you’re speaking to.
  6. Don’t be shy - companies at CTP Event are there because they want to talk to Service leavers like you.
  7. Take your time. The companies are there all day, so take a pause after each discussion.

Questions you could ask.

  1. This is your opportunity to network and find out everything you need to know, such as:
  2. What does the job involve?
  3. What training is required?
  4. What kind of person would be suited to the job?
  5. What skills are needed?
  6. Are there vacancies across a wide range of locations?
  7. Would I work on my own initiative or as part of a team?
  8. Would the company be prepared to train the right person?

Before you leave

Do a mental checklist. Have you spoken to all the companies who are present, and if not, why not? Don’t leave with any regrets. A company you hadn’t previously considered may just have an opportunity that matches your requirements.
