We design, we guide, we protect, we sustain, we train, we transform – Come and join BMT. BMT is dedicated to tackling the most crucial engineering challenges of our era, fostering an environment where individuals with exceptional technical expertise provide meaningful, practical solutions.

Committed to creating a safer, more efficient, effective, and sustainable future, we value diversity, equity, and inclusion, recognising their pivotal role in achieving our business purpose.

With around 1,300+ professionals located globally, we draw upon a wide range of experience and expertise to provide high-quality, high-value products and services.

A strong heritage - Formed in 1985 from the merger of the UK's British Ship Research Association and National Maritime Institute, our heritage includes the water tanks where the famous 'bouncing bomb' was developed during WWII. Our commitment to investing in people and high-quality research has enabled the modern BMT to continue the pioneering maritime spirit: from designing the world's most advanced aircraft carrier to creating new measuring and monitoring systems for the offshore oil and gas industry.

We’ve also played a key role in commercial shipping in landmark events, including the investigation into the 1987 sinking of the RoRo ferry, Herald of Free Enterprise. We’ve helped to test and improve the design of some of the world's tallest buildings and fastest racing cars on land, and were also part of the European Space Agency development team.

Interesting work – We want to be a trusted partner to our customers - the people they know they can rely on to help with their most complex and challenging problems. As we grow, we want to take on bigger projects that have greater impact in the world, really making a difference while giving our people the opportunity to grow too.

Whether we’re developing virtual reality for vessel crew training, monitoring the health of species using eDNA, flood modelling in the cloud, using computing power and algorithms to make ports more secure, or adopting Artificial Intelligence and machine learning to bring the lessons of nature to our aircraft carrier designs; we want to turn our customer’s complex projects into clear thinking and ground-breaking solutions.

Which is why we recruit the best of the best to help us deliver.

Success Story

Tim Neild CBE is a decorated former Royal Navy Warfare Officer who served from 1991 – 2023, specialising in operations and capability development. Commanding warships in every rank and holding Programme Leadership positions in Navy Command Headquarters, he culminated his service in 2023 as a Commodore in Command of the Surface Fleet.

Today, he’s Head of Defence Business Development EMEIA and an integral part of BMT's Future Business Team, responsible for growing the long-term business portfolio in the Defence market across Europe, the Middle East, India, and Africa.

You can read his story below:

"As the sun set on nearly 33 Years in the Royal Navy, having made my decision to leave for pastures new, I spent some considerable time defining what I wanted from my second career and in which sector of the market I wanted to work. Advice confirmed that the Defence sector would deliver the best return on a career's worth of insight and experience, and so I set about igniting my network to horizon scan and secure an opportunity. Having boiled down my requirements for employment to a simple mantra; Purpose, People and Package (in that order), I began the transition from Flotilla Commander to Business Executive.

"I had always admired BMT, having been exposed to the company and their ways of working during my Naval Career. Renowned for their trusted, independent position in the marketplace, the company's values (based around the acronym CRIPT – Collaboration – Respect – Innovation – Passion – Trust) really resonated with me in the same way that the Navy's core values (C2DRIL) had done for many years.

"Equally, as an employee benefit trust, the company's purpose is abundantly clear; to be a trusted independent global business built upon broad maritime domain expertise, with an ability to solve the most complex technical challenges, driven by extraordinary people. In essence, supporting clients to realise their ambitions. With the Purpose nailed and a vacancy in their Defence & Security Business open, I duly applied. The application process was thorough, and after 3 interviews, a presentation to a panel and a personality profiling test to check I was a strategic fit for the business, I was offered the role.

"Throughout the process, I met different people from within the company, which gave me a glimpse of those I would work with – all of whom were devoutly professional but with a sense of fun – right up my street. The package recognised my experience and provided a number of excellent benefits for me and my family. I gladly accepted the role and in doing so, dispelled that frisson of anxiety that comes with Career Transition as you step out of your comfort zone to seek employment beyond the military.

"Nine months down the road and I’m loving it! I feel completely valued by BMT who have wasted no time investing in my future through their Senior Leadership Programme. My line manager is the best Divisional Officer I have had in my working career, and the day job is incredibly interesting and diverse in such a way that I still feel like I’m contributing to a National Endeavor through my day-to-day engagements.

"Best of all though, I’m working in an environment that gives me a work/life balance that is second to none, realising opportunity with my family that hitherto I have not experienced. Every day is a learning day too - particularly for a Warfare Officer in an Engineering Risk Consultancy. But the beauty of an employee benefit trust is that collaboration and teamwork sit at the heart of everything we do – so I’m not short of a shipmate to call on when needed.

"All in all, I’ve realised a great transition into industry thanks to BMT's approach to onboarding and service transition. They’ve boosted my confidence, emboldened my professional skillset and given me the freedom to be more mindful of my 'self' whilst spending more time with my family. Today, I’m only looking forward, without 'missing' my previous life.

"All reflections in the rear-view mirror are brief and focus on the outstanding achievements of my past. At work, I feel valued by BMT, who are actively investing in my personal and professional development - and what’s more, I love being called by my god given name – plus, who knew that wearing your own clothes to work could be so liberating!

"If you’re looking for an opportunity beyond the military in which employee empowerment and workplace culture are at the top of your agenda, I would wholeheartedly recommend BMT to any prospective employee."
