Resettlement Success: From RAF to Plant Fitter Alfie Massiah 67, who works at the power company’s Bury St Edmunds site, said: “I was in the RAF for 26 years based in 11 different locations in a procurement and logistics role starting out in 1968, and I’ve been involved with the Royal British Legion’s Stowmarket branch for two decades serving as treasurer, parade-marshal and poppy collector.

“When I left the RAF the first job I got didn’t suit me, but in 1998 I found a role here, which was a logistics role, so played to my strengths and made use of my experience.

“In 2007 I retrained within the company and am now a Plant Fitter, working in Plant assembly, which I enjoy. I think the skills and discipline I picked up as part of the RAF are still a help to me in my role today.

I feel the values of UK Power Networks and those of the RAF are similar in many ways, there is a culture of looking out for each other and doing your best for your colleagues.

“I have met a number of other ex- service people in this company and they have said much the same thing about an armed forces grounding has served them well. From my perspective it turned me from a boy into a man and has helped me to evolve as a person.”
