Resettlement Success: From Army Engineering to Refurbishment Supervisor

About Tony

Tony Luscombe served in the British Army as Warrant Officer and Military Engineer for 26 years and has been part of the Smart Fleet Solutions team for nearly six years.

During his time in the Army he covered a variety of roles and responsibilities from being the subject matter expert on new software development which allowed the Army to improve its cycle times to make decisions to conducting phase 2 basic military training with new recruits.

Tony Joined Smart Fleet Solutions in December 2013 initially as a Valeter/Smart Repairer and was promoted to Smart Repair QC Team Leader in January 2015.  In this role he gained extensive experience within the workshop regarding the refurbishment process of vehicles and was promoted to his current role of Refurbishment Supervisor in June 2018.

Tony shares what a day at work at Smart Fleet Solutions includes:

“The role of a Refurbishment Supervisor is to work closely with management and supervise the Refurbishment Team Leaders to ensure daily productivity targets are achieved.  My first task of the day is to open up the workshop and ensure everything is set for the day. I do a walk round each morning and speak to the Team Leaders to establish that everything is okay for the day ahead. Sometimes I may need to reallocate staff to different departments of the workshop due to holiday or absence. This can be challenging due to the need to identify which areas of the workshop should take priority.

I also do a lot of production audits of each area within the workshop to ensure that each department is producing the numbers that are expected at the end of the production day. I also have to make certain that the work produced is done efficiently and to a good standard as well as ensuring that paint and other consumables are used cost effectively as this has an impact on the department’s efficiency.

Within my role there is a requirement to do a lot of problem solving including advising Team Leaders or employees on repair methods of vehicles. I also liaise on a daily basis with our customers to maintain a healthy working relationship and confirm that the repairs and refurbishments we produce are of the standard that they expect.

I also carry out a lot of interviews from a recruitment perspective. As a site we are heavily recruiting as the business is growing rapidly and my expertise is often needed to interview potential candidates for a range of positions with the business.  I also carry out performance reviews with current staff and support their ongoing development. Another part of my role is to oversee, support or lead in production meetings and with the Health and Safety briefings we carry out. The role is very varied in a fast paced, challenging and enjoyable environment and is rewarding when you achieve productivity targets.”
