Platoon Weapons Instructor to LGV Driver
SERVICE CAREER

What were your main reasons for leaving the Service?
Time served I reached index linked pensionable age of 55.

Which training, experience or qualifications gained during your Service career are now useful in civilian life?
My management skills learnt through the ranks has put me in good position in my transition to civilian life. Also after 32 years in the hectic fast paced life in the RM working in the civilian sector seems a lot more relaxed.

Which aspects of Service life did you enjoy the most?
I thoroughly enjoyed travelling and meeting new cultures, as a Weapon Instructor I had fantastic opportunities to work outside the Corps and this took me to some amazing places.

Which aspects of Service life did you enjoy the least?
Being separated from my family, but unfortunately when you sign on the dotted line this is part and parcel of life in the military.

RESETTLEMENT

Did you attend a Career Transition Workshop (CTW) and if so, which aspects of the CTW did you find most helpful?
CV construction and interview techniques I found very helpful, this helped me prepare in great detail for my interviews and the proof of the pudding was getting a job on the back of my second interview.

Which other CTP resettlement training courses or workshops did you undertake (e.g. FAR, Business Start Up), and which aspects did you find most helpful?
In my last role I was too busy to attend any other workshops, so I took the hit on this and saved my days up to help me transit when I left as we had to move out of the service accommodation provided into our new home which need a lot of work.

What support did you receive from your CTP Career Consultant?
Jane was always there on the end of a phone, or an email away, I got constant reminders, and prompts from the website linking me to my job / CV profile.

Did you use CTP’s job finding service (e.g. RightJob, Central Support Team) and how useful was it to you? Would you use the service again?
This was great I used it regularly and gave me a great insight into what was available and everything was linked, I could tailor my CV, covering letter and apply for any job I was interested in.

Did you use the CTP website, including MyPlan, and if so, how useful was it to you?
I refer to my answer above, very useful, I didn’t use MyPlan extensively but it did help.

CIVILIAN EMPLOYMENT

How did you get your job, and what was the interview process like?
The Company had signed up to the Armed Forces Covenant which is always a great start I think for a service leaver. The Job advertisement was to train a Level 2 driver to become a level 1. I had my level 1 but had no CPC training or experience, so I applied for the role and weighed off the level 1 training against the CPC training and the site manager saw this as a fair trade.

The interview was so relaxed, I prepared well as Gregory’s is a big Family run Company and finding out information was fairly easy, so going into the interview I was very confident. It went very well and was offered the job two days later.

What does your job entail and which skills gained in the military do you use?
I pick up Milk from a Dairy & take it to our Distribution Warehouse, this is a shuttle process. The skills that I use are, diplomacy, reliability and the ability to learn new things very quickly.

What obstacles did you face when settling into your job?
I didn’t face any real obstacles when settling in, it was just a case of getting used to the shift pattern, working a fantastic routine of four on and four off.

What aspects of resettlement training have you found useful in your job?
Nothing really relating to the job, the resettlement training helped me secure the Job.

What advice would you give other Service leavers?
Don’t fear taking off the Uniform, you have so much to offer with all the transferrable skills you have, this is why Company’s like Gregory’s Distribution Holding Ltd have signed up to the Armed Forces Covenant, they get a trained dependable individual which they are willing to take a gamble on.
