Prison Officer opportunities within Her Majesty’s Prison & Probation service (HMPPS) Current vacancies

HMPPS is currently advertising Prison Officer vacancies within 73 of our 104 prisons across England & Wales. We’ve updated our vacancies on CTP’s online job portal, RightJob to reflect our vacancies within the 11 regional areas across England & Wales.

Veterans in HMPPS

HMPPS prides itself on being an employer of choice for military veterans. Veterans have made up over 1 in 8 of our recruits to the Prison Officer role in the last 3 years, and around 3% of all Service leavers become a Prison Officer upon leaving the Armed Forces.

Veterans choose HMPPS in the knowledge that they’re able to utilise their teamwork, discipline, communication and other transferrable skills within the prison environment. Additionally, the familiarity of structure, routine and the pride of being a uniformed service consistently attracts Service leavers to HMPPS. Our roles provide good opportunities for promotion or specialisation, and make HMPPS the 2nd career of choice for so many veterans. Coupled with the benefit of a government pension, of which the employer contributes 27% of the employee’s salary, and the job security that comes with working for Government, we’re a popular choice for our ever-growing strong, veteran community.

HMPPS chooses veterans as we know you have the qualities required to succeed, the ability to keep the public safe and the discipline and communication skills to change lives. Veterans perform better in our assessment process than non-veterans, and this demonstrates that you possess the skills that we need.

How do I apply?

We work with Career Transition Partnership to provide Service leavers with access to our roles. So all you need to do is head over to CTP’s online job portal, RightJob to see all of our vacancies. Once you find you think suits your expertise, you’ll be directed to our website, prison & probation jobs , where we house all the latest vacancies, information on the roles, recruitment process and tips for applying.

If, after reading the information provided on RightJob and our website you feel that the role is right for you, search our interactive prison map and see which location most suits you and your living arrangements upon leaving the Armed Forces, and apply for that prison!

You’ll then be entered into the following process with the estimated timelines for completion:

  • Online application (10 minutes)
  • Online Test – Stage 1 (25 minutes)
  • Online Test – Stage 2 (30-50 minutes)
  • Online Assessment Centre (½ day)
77% of Service leavers pass our Prison Officer assessment process.

On average it takes 6-12 months to recruit a Prison Officer from the point an application is submitted, to the applicant’s first day. Therefore, we would encourage those who are leaving the military to look at our roles and apply for them as early as possible. We can also arrange for a delayed start date, up to around 18-months from the date the application is submitted.
