Category: Recruitment Publish date: 04/09/2023

Post-service careers take flight at GE Aerospace GE Aerospace works around the world and around the clock to invent the future of flight, lift people up and bring them home safely. At our Wales site just north of Cardiff, this is the vision that powers some of the world’s leading commercial airlines.

This dedicated maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility is focussed exclusively on supporting commercial customers. The site has a long and storied history dating back to the flight of Concorde (for which the site serviced the Olympus engines) and beyond. Combined with a global reputation for quality and product safety, it’s one of our most high-profile MRO facilities.

Today, the site focuses on supporting the CFM56 and GE90 commercial flights for customers from around the world. Looking to the future, the site will also be the dedicated overhaul home of the GE9X engine when it enters into service on the wing of the Boeing 777X. It truly is a powerhouse in the aviation maintenance sector and contributes significantly to the Welsh and UK economies (estimated £83mn contribution to the local economy with £10mn of GVA added through employee spending) - employing over 1,100 highly skilled professionals.

Our reputation for safety, quality and excellence creates opportunity for careers that can take people around the world and last for decades. The team need the right mix of technical, professional, management and leadership skills to keep engines flying around the world; and with that in mind, the Wales site will commence its next recruitment campaign from September 2023 through to the end of 2024. Recruitment will cover the whole site, with roles available in operational support, engine overhaul, repair and tradesperson positions.

These roles will see you working on the overhaul, repair, modification, inspection, replacement, or defect rectification of an engine/module/accessory/component/unit. Other responsibilities will include the restoration and repair of component/engine/module to a serviceable condition in conformity with an approved standard, and to ensure that cost effective operation is achieved.

There are a range of transferable skills which are highly sought after within GE Aerospace – and particularly at the Wales site. A strong attention to detail, the ability to effectively interpret detailed documented work instructions, a team player with a flexible approach and positive attitude, as well as the willingness and ability to follow an effective training plan in a timely manner. Some roles will require the completion of a formal engineering apprenticeship or relevant industry experience.

“Service leavers are an excellent fit for our company”, says Royal Air Force veteran and Technical Training Leader, Damon Ballinger.

“The skillsets and personal behaviours that are honed with military service are a massive advantage for us as a business and really allow the veteran to kickstart a second career with us.

"We have a wide range of opportunities from technicians overhauling and repairing jet engines, to roles in our support functions and operational leadership positions. The transferrable skills gained in military service fit these roles like a glove”.

There is a very generous benefits package for employees including a pension, health insurance and much more. We are a signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant and a Gold Award holder for the Defence Employee Recognition Scheme, both of which demonstrate GE Aerospace’s commitment to Service leavers and veterans.

We have a global employee resource group for veterans, the GE Veterans Network, that provides support and networking opportunities. We also have a specific policy in place to support Armed Forces reservists that work for the company, enabling them to train and deploy whenever required without affecting their career opportunities.
