Case Study: The story of ex-Forces, James Wagstaff

This is the story of James Wagstaff, an ex-Forces employee, currently Programme Delivery Manager at the Advanced Manufacturing Technology Centre.

James started working for MTC Training as an Automation Trainer delivering training predominantly on Pneumatics and Hydraulics. He then diversified his training capability, delivering Robotics and PLC training after upskilling himself.
After 12 months, he was promoted to Senior Trainer responsible for a team of 10 trainers, looking after the day-to-day training requirements for the training centre.

In April 2022, he became the Programme Delivery Manager responsible for all technical training within the AMTC. He now has a team of 18 people delivering a range of Level 3 and 4 apprenticeships, as well as a HNC programme.
James shares his experience about working with MTC:

What inspired you to go into training apprentices?

The key thing that inspired me to move into training was to be able to not only provide the technical skills I have learned from my time in the military, but to have an impact on apprentices’ attitude and mindset to work. The military have a different mindset and imparting this onto an apprentice was an exciting opportunity.

What was it like transitioning from your military background to the role you’re in now?

"I found it strange leaving the Forces initially, as I had spent years having a structure to follow and my life had been planned out for me. Once I got into the civvy world, I found that there was less structure than I had been used to. This all changed when I became an Engineering Trainer, as I then had to provide a structure for the apprentices I was teaching. After 2 and a half years of feeling a little disjointed, becoming a trainer was when I felt most at home. A big part of feeling a sense of belonging was the amount of ex-military personnel working within the training team at MTC Training."

What do you enjoy the most about training engineering apprentices?

"I like working with budding engineers and being able impart knowledge which is going to develop them further. Due to the uniqueness of military training, it is great to be able to incorporate some of how I was trained with the apprentices."

What is your experience working with MTC (People, career progression, values, benefits etc.?

"My experience of working with MTC has been fantastic, they have supported and developed me technically as well as providing me with qualifications to become a trainer in the adult education sector. MTC has strong values and people adopt these on a daily basis. The people are friendly, supportive and there is always a positive atmosphere. MTC offers some fantastic benefits, which add to the feeling of being valued as an employee."
