Case Study

Aaron Smith, Regional Transport Manager at Hanson UK

Could you tell us a little more about your route into Hanson?

"My route into Hanson was through an application for a Regional Transport Manager role in Concrete. I’d previously spent 10 years in the military where I gained hands-on experience with a variety of trucks and equipment, and was attracted to Hanson because of the potential avenues for progression and ongoing training and qualifications that they could offer. I’d always been interested in the construction industry and living close to Ketton, the Cement Tankers had always caught my eye."

What do you enjoy the most about your current role?

"I really enjoy the variety of responsibilities that come hand-in-hand with looking after the transport side of three large regions across the UK, each presenting their own unique challenges that require a range of different skills to overcome. I love meeting different people with different personalities and different experiences – there’s always someone to learn from
."

What have you enjoyed the most, so far, in your career with us?

"I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the freedom and ability to step away, have a think, and make sure my regions are working as best they can. I’ve also loved leading on the HGV Driver Apprenticeship course that Hanson is just getting off the ground."

Would you recommend Hanson to other Service leavers?

"Absolutely. Hanson has been an incredible support to me in my personal development, and as an Armed Forces leaver, I would highly recommend this company to others seeking a new career path. One significant benefit has been the opportunity to undertake a Level 7 Senior Leadership Apprenticeship, fully funded through the Apprentice Levy scheme.

"Moreover, Hanson has also provided me with an Executive MBA top-up course, which has been invaluable to my professional growth. In addition to these achievements, I’ve taken part in various leadership sessions with Dragon Learning, become a FORS practitioner, updated my Transport Manager CPC, and completed two driver CPC sessions. I’ve also become an Inclusion Champion, and these are just some examples of the comprehensive development opportunities available at Hanson.

"Overall, I’m confident that my experience and the exceptional support provided by Hanson would be highly attractive to anyone transitioning from the Armed Forces seeking a new and fulfilling career."
