Category: Recruitment Publish date: 31/07/2023

Career opportunities at BAM UK – supporting our Armed Forces community For almost 150 years, we’ve been shaping the UK & Ireland’s vital infrastructure and creating many of the country's most iconic buildings. Today, we're part of the Royal BAM Group, one of the largest construction companies in Europe.

Our aim is to leave the world a better place than we found it – to build a more sustainable tomorrow. We do this by connecting, building and maintaining places where people and the planet prosper together. This is our lasting legacy.

Our people are at the heart of everything we do. We understand that diverse teams deliver the best results for our company and our clients. Which is why our commitment to diversity, inclusion, fairness and respect runs through the entire employee experience at BAM. This means we don't support 'one version' of brilliance, but instead welcome a wide diversity of skills, experiences, and new perspectives.

Put simply, we want BAM to be a great place to work and for our people to get the support they need to be themselves, in a diverse and inclusive workspace.

Committed to supporting our Armed Forces community

To support our colleagues in being the best version of themselves, one of our key internal activities over the last 12 months has been to create and further develop our colleague Inclusion Networks.

Service leavers and reservists are a central pillar of the BAM UK workplace culture, and have resulted in the creation of Forces@BAM – our internal inclusion network for anyone connected to the UK military. As with all of our Diversity & Inclusion Networks, Forces@BAM also has an Executive Sponsor who provides support and guidance at a senior level.

Most recently, Forces@BAM have created five business-wide commitments to support the recruitment of anyone from the Armed Forces community:

  • We guarantee an interview for every veteran whose application meets the criteria for the position
  • Any veteran who joins us can join our Forces@BAM network and is offered a 'buddy' to help settle in
  • We have a reservist policy in place to support our serving employees to take time out for training and duties
  • Reservists will also receive up to 2 weeks paid leave on top of holiday for training and duties
  • We support all who have served in a uniformed service, or have family members serving
We’ve also been awarded Gold by the Ministry of Defence Employer Recognition Scheme, for our ongoing work to support the Armed Forces community. This is testament to the inclusive working environment across BAM’s UK businesses, which allows everyone to bring their whole self to work, feel safe and comfortable, and access opportunities for progression by removing barriers.

David Murray, Senior Behavioural Safety Advisor & co-Chair of the Forces@BAM Inclusion Network:

“Recognition and support for all those who make up the Armed Forces community is key.

"Having served 23 years in the Army Air Corps myself, I know that skills learned in Service are skills for life.

"Which is why, here at BAM, we’re committed to helping veterans and reservists transition and transfer their skills to a variety of civilian career opportunities.”
