Prison staff have a key role to play in protecting the public and giving prisoners a second chance to break the cycle of crime and change their lives. This might involve encouraging participation in education and substance recovery programmes, as well as helping prisoners to maintain vital family ties.

Former military personnel have many transferrable skills which make them suitable for roles in the Prison or Probation Service - including good communication and influencing skills, commitment to quality, effective decision-making, care and understanding. Probation Service staff work with those on probation before and after release, supporting people to get their lives back on track and helping to keep the public safe.

Eligible applicants who pass our assessment processes will be offered a 2-year fixed-term appointment with the option to convert to permanency, subject to approval, after 12 months; under Exception 2 to the Civil Service recruitment principles.

Successful applicants will be offered either a home to work travel or resettlement package to support their transition within their first 2 years of employment.
