Merging the Civil Service GFIE and RISE Schemes

Category: News Publish date: 04/09/2023

Merging the Civil Service GFIE and RISE Schemes The GFIE scheme, which offers direct employment opportunities in the Civil Service for veterans, Service leavers and military spouses/partners, has been operating since 2020. Last year, we announced that we would incorporate the RISE programme previously led by HMRC into our portfolio.

We’ve since reviewed how the two schemes operate and have come to the conclusion that given the similarities, they can be merged to create one single scheme which will operate under the GFIE title. This will make the process and eligibility criteria clearer for anyone looking to apply for one of our vacancies. Our review found that there was some confusion about the eligibility criteria for GFIE and RISE vacancies, and whether those who were in their resettlement periods could apply.

In short, any vacancies that are advertised by GFIE (which will be fixed-term appointments of up to 2 years) are open to those within their resettlement periods, as long as they will be able to take up the role within a reasonable period of time. We know that vetting can take time depending on the level of clearance required, so it often makes sense for those in their resettlement period to apply early and allow their vetting to run through whilst they’re in the last months of service.

Each role may differ in the expectations of a start date, so our advice would be to use 3-6 months before date of discharge as an approximate, and to let the Vacancy Holder know of your expected discharge date.

If you’re unsure about whether you can or should apply for a GFIE vacancy, please contact us and we’ll be happy to advise.
