German Language in Paderborn

Category: News Publish date: 04/05/2016

German Language in Paderborn 4 Service leavers have recently completed a six month German course, 3 days per week, laid on by the Paderborn Garrison Labour Support Unit.

The course is run with a view to British Forces Germany closing in 2019, when all those locally employed will lose their jobs; many, despite years of working in Germany for the Forces, do not speak good enough German to get a job with a German firm. The majority were, of course, Service leavers in the past.

The course aimed for an A1/A2 German ‘Basic User’ standard, but two of our Service leavers achieved B1 ‘Independent User’ level, which is the minimum required by a German employer.

Of the four, two have secured jobs; another is going into a two-year apprenticeship in IT whilst the fourth has been granted post discharge Resettlement.

If two of these names seem very German, it is because the men took their wife’s surname on marriage!
