Service Leavers Work Placement Scheme 

As an employer, the value we place on the skills and work ethic that veterans bring to the workplace is demonstrated by our positive recruitment policy towards the service community. Our work placement scheme, specifically aimed at service personnel nearing the end of their service, helps ensure that those considering Further Education teaching as a second career have the opportunity to explore the sector and identify progression pathways within it. You will have the opportunity to meet with a range of staff at the college, employed in a number of different areas, to help you best prepare for your second career. 

The college has a dedicated Armed Forces Community Point of Contact, whom you will have the opportunity to have an informal discussion with, where they will share their own experience of leaving the forces and entering the FE sector as a teacher and answer any questions you may have. 

Process  

You will have the opportunity to apply for an advertised work placement vacancy by submitting your CV along with a covering letter detailing your area of interest, why you want to participate in the scheme and outlining why your skills are relevant to a teaching role. You will receive feedback and guidance on your completed application from our HR team as part of your work placement. You will also be given the opportunity to: 
  • Have independent 1-1 careers guidanceMeet with a member of Senior Management 
  • Meet with the teacher training to discuss qualifications and progress 
  • Attend a half day of x-college observations with advanced practitioners 
  • Spend a day with your chosen department 
  • Prepare and deliver a lesson for students aged 16-19 in your chosen subject
