Category: Job Finding Publish date: 01/11/2019

Civilian Work Attachments in the Rail Industry with QTS As part of the Renew Holdings Group of businesses, QTS is an independently branded subsidiary with an expert knowledge in the rail industry, directly delivering engineering services aligned to the needs of our clients.

QTS is looking to engage with transitioning forces personnel to work in delivering rail infrastructure works in the Preston, Crewe and Nottingham areas.

As a pioneering leader in rail engineering and design, QTS is able to offer opportunities to work on a Civilian Work Attachment (CWA). This allows participants the ability to gain experience working in the rail industry and undertake the Personal Track Safety qualification, a competency which is fundamental to working in and around the rail infrastructure.

QTS has a range of national fencing contracts, operating from strategic locations across the UK. By working alongside our fencing teams, you will be mentored by an experienced fencing team leader and undertake fencing installation works.

Our offer is free from obligation other than imparting your hardworking, adaptable and resourceful impact on the projects you’ll be involved with. During the CWA, we will:

  • Offer close supervision and mentoring in undertaking rail infrastructure works in a flexible timescale depending on your availability.
  • Provide supervision and mentorship for you to learn how to work safely in a rail environment.
  • Depending on the time you have available, we can provide the practical & theoretical knowledge and fund the undertaking of the Personal Track Safety qualification.
  • Provide accommodation, depending on home address and site location.
We are looking for candidates who:
  • Have the passion, perseverance and resourcefulness to be a success.
  • Have experience in working outdoors throughout the year, delivering work in challenging timescales and complex environments.
  • Who thrive by working in teams and have a passion for delivering work safely, on time and to the required standards.
  • Have strong and clear communication skills, able to work in a structured and delegated manner to achieve the desired outcomes.

Whilst not necessary, experience in the following will be of benefit:
  • Experience in construction of any discipline.
  • Qualifications and experience in the operation of site plant machinery.
Working in and around the railway is an ever changing and challenging role and we think Armed Forces personnel have the right mixture of skills to work with us. On successful completion of the CWA, if you enjoy your experience with us and there is a suitable role for you, we will continue your development in a paid position. At QTS, we are proud to offer ongoing personal and professional development throughout your career within our organisation.

Case study from ex-military personnel now working for the organisation:

Lewis Kinley was a serving soldier in the Royal Engineers when he was introduced to Chris Ackerman, Senior Contracts Manager with AMCO-Giffen, part of the Renew Holdings Group, at an Armed Forces Engagement day in April 2019, run by Rail Forum East Midlands in Derby.

Having worked on demanding military engineering projects and exercises around the UK and in Cyprus, Lewis was keen to ensure his transition time from moving between his military career to a civilian life was used as productively as possible.

AMCO-Giffen worked closely with Lewis to create an attachment to give him experience of working in a rail construction environment on a bridge route clearance project. He has thrived on site, using his telehandler operating qualification skills and hands-on approach to quickly add value in completing tasks and progressing works.

A key aspect is the mentorship AMCO-Giffen is providing in supporting Lewis while he prepares to complete his Personal Track Safety qualification, allowing him to progress to work on or near the railway line. Having made a great impression, Lewis has accepted a permanent role working as a Senior General Operative in the East Midlands business.

Having seen the success that Lewis Kinley has achieved working with AMCO-Giffen, QTS is keen to work in a similar way with Armed Forces Personnel who are leaving active service and are interested in gaining experience in rail infrastructure construction works.
