From Weapon Engineer to Tax Professional Compliance Caseworker

Daniel's Story
What attracted you to HMRC?

After working for 6 years as a Weapons Engineer in the Royal Navy I wanted an exciting new challenge which offered living in one area and career prospects. RISE offers you that stepping stone to opportunities you wouldn’t have in other jobs.

What do you enjoy about working at HMRC?

I like working on my own accord and pushing myself to find out the correct legislation or cross-referencing information to put a case together. A work/life balance is a massive factor for me and working for HMRC gives me the support and flexibility that I need.

How has your background in the Royal Air Force enhanced your career?

Being an engineer has set the foundations for this role, being able to adapt and improvise where needed and having an eye for detail. Staying flexible within the Armed Forces sticks with you and keeps you versatile when entering HMRC. Any transferrable and leadership skills you hold will be a great asset to your role.

Why should a Service leaver consider HMRC?

There is a very familiar structure in HMRC from day one. The support and guidance you get is second to none and you really feel as part of a team. Several of my friends who left the Armed Forces have went into a job with no growth prospects and very little support, whereas in HMRC you are given everything you need to succeed.

What skills do you need within your role?

Leadership, communication, the ability to show empathy and have an eye for detail.

Why are Service leavers a good fit?

In so many ways HMRC is alike to the military as there is hierarchy, structure, support and discipline. You also have the added benefit of being at home every night and the ‘stay flexible’ attitude of the Royal Navy really shines through in HMRC.
