From the RAF to HMRC

Becky’s Story
I was excited by the prospect of a new HMRC regional centre in my location, and therefore chanllenged myself to learn something new.
I was a data analyst in the RAF, and this honed my natural curiosity and gave me the confidence to challenge. I look for patterns in data, am comfortable in a spreadsheet and readily challenge the status quo. I have brought transferable skills to HMRC from both the RAF and DWP, including leadership and communication which to me are the most important behaviours to demonstrate. I am used to moving into different roles every three years (a throwback to military posting timelines) so I look for new and exciting opportunities to help me stay “fresh” in the role.

I am now a VAT Frontline manager and I like that I am given the autonomy at HMRC, from making my own decisions, to managing my own work and my team.

Service leavers should consider HMRC for their next career step. It can be very hard for a service leaver to adapt to civilian life, but a career in HMRC will help transition smoothly.
