Javelin Anti Tank Missile Operator to Trainee Smart Metering Expert

Stuart's story
Javelin Anti Tank Missile Operator to Trainee Smart Metering Expert

British Gas employed me and trained me from scratch and made me feel very welcome on the Smart Metering Traineeship. My training group was one of the first to achieve their NVQ qualification and I have also had the opportunity to work as a trainer at a couple of our academies in Thatcham and Dartford, but have now returned to working in the field installing meters for our customers.

As in the Army, working for British Gas means you need to be able to think on your feet and use your problem solving skills. Having a trade background is a help but by no means essential and it also helps if you have knowledge of working with tools and equipment. Great communication skills are essential.

The thing I enjoy most about being part of the British Gas family is the loyalty from the company; if you ever have a problem they will help and support you. I am also surprised at how close we are as a team, even though we don’t work together on a daily basis. Coming from a military background, the team working has been really important to me, being part of a brotherhood. When I came out of the Army, I thought I would be standing alone, but since I joined British Gas and started at the academy, I have felt part of another team. The banter is amazing and the tea and cakes at our team meetings aren’t bad either!

There is also no limit here on your career development with British Gas, and I'd recommend working here to any Service leaver considering it - it’s a great career with a great company.
