Ashley's story
From Army to Trainee Smart Metering Expert
British Gas are now recruiting Trainee Smart Metering Experts and many of our new trainees are from a military background, like Ashley. To find out more about the role here is a blog from Ashley Wood, who is currently training at our Academy in Thatcham and will soon be out working in his local area, leading the roll out of Smart Metering to 12 million customers. We asked Ashley a few questions about his six months so far with British Gas.

When did your start with British Gas Ashley?
I started in July 2014 after six years spent in the Army

What do you think about our recruitment process?
I thought all areas were really relevant to the role from the Online Application to the assessment centre and interview and team task.

What type of person would make a good Trainee Smart Metering Expert?
I would say anyone could do it, as in our training group no one is the same, there are males, females and people from different backgrounds and cultures, everyone is different so anyone with the right attitude would be great in the role.

Tell us about your job
It’s hard to say really, yes the job is working with meters but every day is completely different as every scenario and every customer is different. It’s great when you get a customer’s heating back on for them, they really appreciate it.

What are the best bits about your job?
Definitely the job security and the fact I am working for a blue chip company. There is a great respect for the brand and the benefits such as pension and bonuses are really good and my colleagues are fantastic; there is a great camaraderie, similar to the army.

What advice would you give someone who wants to do your job?
Go for it! As long as you have bags of enthusiasm you do not need a technical background as the training is excellent at the academy, they look after you well and make sure you are well equipped to do the job.

Would this role suit ex forces personnel?
Yes definitely, I spent 5 to 6 years in the Army in a role working alongside Subject Matter Experts and this role is similar in a way. Services personnel are all excellent timekeepers, are well presented, care for their kit and take information on board and we do what it takes to get the job done well and all these skills link into the Smart Metering Expert role.
