Helicopter Technician to Field Service Manager

Jennie's story
Helicopter Technician to Field Service Manager

Before joining British Gas I was a Helicopter Technician in the Army. Upon leaving the Armed Forces, I decided to begin my civilian career with British Gas for the great career prospects and the training and support provided.

I joined the company as an Apprentice in 2001 and qualified as an engineer in 2002. Although my first day of training was several years ago, I remember the really good facilities and how well informed and looked after we were as new recruits

Following qualification, I then completed the engineer development course in 2004 to gain a better understanding of the business and in 2006 I applied for the new role of Technical Support Manager which I was successful in. I then became a Service Manager in 2010, which is the role I am still doing today.

At British Gas, I especially like the support that’s offered in all areas from my Line Manager, the range of courses available for further learning and development and the great team effort that’s involved in delivering great customer service. I find that skills such as motivation, drive, the will to succeed and great team working transfer well to British Gas from my former military role.

I would say to other Service leavers that joining British Gas is a great opportunity and a great second career. I’ve never looked back; there are excellent opportunities to move up the ladder and the benefits including pensions are really good. British Gas is like one big family, with everyone looking out for each other.
