Steven's story
From Royal Horse Artillery to Smart Energy Expert What were you doing before you joined British Gas?
I served in the British Army in the Kings Troop RHA for 12 years

What was your role in the military?
I was a Bombardier in the Army and my role was to carry out State and Ceremonial parades and I was also on tour in Iraq in 2006.

On your first day of your training at British Gas, what was your initial impression?

I was a bit nervous as I had been in the army from the age of 16, so it was only my second job, but when everyone turned up in the class, within a couple of minutes we were chatting away so everyone felt more at ease. The training staff were really good and we also got our vans and uniform on day one, it was actually a bit like kit day in the army. From then on I knew I was in a good job and the training was first class.

What similar skills do you need at British Gas that you needed in your military role?
Time management, self management, self discipline and our ‘being the best of the best’ mentality all fit in with the BG values

What do you enjoy most about being part of the British Gas Family?

The team we work in is like a close knit family so it’s very similar to being in the Army, but it’s also great that you sort of work for yourself in a way. The benefits are also great from retail vouchers to pension schemes.

How has your role developed since you started?

Well, 4 weeks ago I won the Apprentice of the year award and now I also Mentor the new starters that are coming into the field and I have also applied for a coaching position within my team, not bad for 2 years with a company!!

How do you spend your spare time?

I am restoring 1967 VW Beetle

What unusual thing would people not necessarily know about you?

Well, I have competed in two point to point races and I finished second in one

What would you say to anyone leaving a military career and thinking of joining British Gas?

I would recommend joining British Gas, it’s a fantastic job with career progression and lots of benefits just like the military and it’s that good that my wife also left the military to join British Gas!
