The Interview

If you are selected for an interview, you’ll normally be met by your prospective manager, plus a member of our HR team. They’ll discuss your interest in the role, and ask you a series of competency-based questions which will give you the opportunity to draw upon your experiences. You may even be given the opportunity to deliver a presentation to showcase your skills.

If you perform well in your first interview, you may be invited back for a second interview, where you’ll have the chance to meet some different members of the team.

Here are our top tips for this stage of the process:

  • Make sure you arrive in good time – if you’re running late, you’re more likely to be flustered and not perform as well.
  • Be fully up to speed with the content of your CV. The interviewers may well refer to it, so it’s well worth ensuring everything is fresh in your mind.
  • Be prepared. We’ll expect you to be able to talk about why you want to join Anglian Water. We suggest you do your research, so you’re ready for these questions. Don’t forget, you’ll be meeting people who work for us – they’ll be hoping to hear that you share their passion for what we do.
  • Think about the kind of skills we might be looking for, and be ready to give specific examples of occasions when you’ve demonstrated those skills.
  • Think about what questions you’d like to ask us, too. You’ll have a chance to do so after the interview finishes. We suggest writing your questions down in advance, so you can be sure not to forget anything.
  • Perhaps most importantly, be yourself. After all, we want to know as much as possible about the person we’re looking to employ.
Example interview questions:

1. Tell us about a time when you’ve had to meet a particularly tight deadline. What did you do? What was the result?
2. Tell us about something you have done to improve health & safety within your current or previous role.
3. Can you give us an example of when you have identified an improvement that could be made in your own work? What did you do?

Practice test questions can be found here.

After the Interview

If your application is successful, you’ll initially be contacted and offered the role over the phone. This will be followed by a formal offer pack in the post, which will contain your employment contract and some paperwork for you to complete and return to us. We will then progress with completing some pre-employment checks such as gaining references and carrying out a driving licence check.

We’ll keep in touch with you before your start date to ensure everything’s in place ready for your first day with Anglian Water!

If you are unsuccessful after your interview, you can request some detailed feedback which should help you in your future applications.
