From REME to Amazon Senior Engineer

Jennifer's story
What did you do in the military?/What was your last role in the Military?

I spent 6 years training with the REME (Royal electrical and mechanical engineers) as an Aircraft Technician, my postings were mainly in Wattisham Airfield in Ipswich where I obtained the rank of Corporal. During my career, I worked on Apache and Lynx helicopters.

Why did you apply to Amazon?

After returning from Afghanistan as I contractor I was looking for a job where I could really grow and expand my engineering knowledge and a friend of mine also ex-REME was applying in the Bristol area. He urged me to put my CV in, so I did.

What role are you doing?

My role within amazon is a Senior Engineer. I run a team of approx. 15-16 technicians. We carry out scheduled and reactive maintenance, whilst conducting system checks, and keeping Fulfillment Centre running. It’s my job to make sure my technicians are working safely, efficiently and have the correct training for the correct tasks.

How did you find the recruitment process? Any advice for candidates?

The recruitment process was straightforward. The day I walked into the Fulfillment Center I was informed that I would be interviewed for a senior tech role instead of a technician as they felt my CV suited that role better. This wasn’t a show stopper. My advice would be to relax, as we all need to in any recruitment and interview process. Be yourself, speak clearly and be confident.

What have you learnt in your time at Amazon?

These buildings are full of all sorts of people good people of course, people from all different kinds of backgrounds. As one engineer to another it is always great to share stories and experiences, you never know when they might come in handy!

What has been the biggest difference between the Military & Amazon?

Well no uniform inspections with a Monday morning parade that’s for sure. 7* What was your onboarding experience like?Easy and well laid out. My recruiter kept in contact frequently and when time came for me to finally take on the role I was met by my Area manager who helped me get set up with the equipment and kit I needed.
