From Tank Crewman to H&S Advisor

Andy's story

I completed 17 years in the Royal Armoured Corp starting my military career as a tank crewman. During my time in the Army I saw active service on operational tours around the world including Bosnia, Kosovo Iraq and Afghanistan. The military allowed me to complete many courses in leadership and management, the skills learnt were transferable to civilian employers.

Whilst on termination leave from the Army, I underwent a voluntary work placement with UK Power Networks Services at Heathrow airport. This was my first experience of working in the civilian sector and in the electricity industry. This opportunity was invaluable and gave me the appetite to apply for a role within UK Power Networks Services.

I was successful in applying for a position as a health, safety and sustainability advisor working on rail projects. The initial learning curve was steep but being in a team that offered support and advise really helped with my transition and new career. I have now been employed at UK Power Networks services for 6 years and been promoted to a HSEQ manager working for a multi utility joint venture on Ministry of Defence garrisons.

UK Power Networks is a company which values drive, determination and focus. These are traits that I had picked up during my military service. The business continues to challenge me on daily basis. If you enjoy challenges, career progression and a company that values its staff, this is the company to work for.
