Business Services Assistant

Job role 

As the Business Services Administrator you will be responsible for ensuring the safe and effective running of all direct and contractor field resources for a range of work types including Small Service Connections and Fault activity, thereby ensuring full utilisation of the resources. It will be necessary to update all scheduling tools and other in-house IT systems. 

A large part of the role includes liaising with Operational teams to ensure that delivery target are meet achieving great Customer satisfaction for Network Operations EPN , South East & London Regions. 

UK Power Networks have 90 offices across the three electricity distribution networks in London, the East of England and the South East. We also build, operate and maintain private electricity networks for external clients such as BAA and London Underground. We manage the network and maintain assets handling voltages from LV through 11kV and up to 132kV.

Knowledge, skills, qualifications & experience required:
  • Ability to work in a pressured environment as part of a highly focused team
  • Previous experience within a customer service environment

  • Good level PC literacy, with the ability to learn and use a variety of systems with fast and accurate keyboard skills

Technical Support Assistant

The Technical Support Assistant will work alongside the Project Managers to gain knowledge and experience of design and pricing. The Technical Support Assistant should be fully aligned and wholly comfortable with UK Power Networks culture and values. 

As Technical Support Assistant, the jobholder will be expected to demonstrate the ability to work in a time critical, compliance driven environment and possess the skills required to deal with technical issues associated with project re-quotes and work closely with the existing Projects team. 

This role would suit applicants with limited technical knowledge looking for their first opportunity to gain experience of electrical distribution network design.

Essential
  • Already be in possession of City & Guilds 232 in Electrical Engineering, be working towards (or prepared to undertake) this (or similar) qualification, or able to demonstrate suitable competency

Trainee/Junior/Project Designer

Role Purpose:

Working within a team of Designers reporting to a Lead Design Engineer, the post-holder is required to produce designs, quotations and work packs for new customer connections and diversions. 

The Designer is guided by Design Policies and the Connection Charging Manual and is expected to meet all Electricity Guaranteed Standards and safety standards. 

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience: 
Essential
  • A broad understanding of current Engineering Design Standards and Licence Conditions
  • Experience working in an office based environment utilising Microsoft packages proficiently
  • Customer focused with excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Flexible, adaptable and highly motivated
  • Able to work as an individual with minimum supervision and as part of a team to meet strict deadlines
  • Able to produce a high standard of work that is both detailed and accurate
  • Valid UK Driving licence 

Desirable
  • In possession of Level 3 National Certificate / ONC in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent) as a minimum or currently enrolled on the course

Project Engineer

Job Purpose: 

The Project Engineer’s role is to deliver the engineering activities within their allocated project team. To undertake the delivery of Construction requirements relating to the UK Power Networks owned assets and associated infrastructure under the direction of the Construction Manager as part of the Investment Delivery team.

The Project Engineer will work with and support the Project Managers, Commissioning Engineer’s, Alliance Partner, Contractors and other members of the Investment Delivery Management team in the delivery of Business objectives and future budget identification and delivery. 

Work with the Project Supervisors, Electrical Fitters, Alliance Partners and Contractors to undertake and complete the construction and delivery of a portfolio of projects in a safe and efficient manner. 

The Project Engineer will ensure delivery of capital works construction projects, APP and Connections as directed by the Lead Project Engineer, oversee the management of substation and cabling construction works as required. The position holder will work with team members to ensure high standards of safety management are maintained throughout all activities during the delivery of the engineering tasks in accordance with the UK Power Networks Stay Safe initiative.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience: 

Essential (once training is complete)
  • Senior Authorised Person as defined by the Distribution Safety Rules – Preferable 132kV
  • Experience in distribution systems through the range 400v to 132kV
  • Educated to a minimum HNC level qualification in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
  • Working knowledge of distribution HV Systems
  • Knowledge of Building Services Systems
  • Ability to read schematic drawings and understand content
  • Ability to work in different environments
  • Excellent analytical, organisation & planning skills
  • Ability to identify problems, understand key issues and investigate alternatives
  • Hold full driving licence

Project Manager

Job Purpose:

The role of the Project Manager in our Investment Delivery team is to project lead and provide construction assurance on either a portfolio or individual projects from inception to completion. You will be responsible for agreeing and implementing the project delivery strategy from Gate A to Gate D stages including implementation of business transformation processes (BTP) with a focus on safety, quality and budget as per UKPN requirements.

The role will require you to forecast resource and material requirements, monitor project costs and delivery, run contractor performance, provide regular reports and other functions as required by the Sub Programme Manager.

The role also includes liaison with Design, Infrastructure Planning, Procurement, Supply Chain and Asset Management.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience:
  • Experience of leading construction and/or engineering projects of values in the region of £5mil plus. A background in distribution substation and cable/overhead line systems is helpful.
  • Strong organisational skills, attention to detail, the ability to lead multiple projects and deadlines, excellent interpersonal skills and strong commercial awareness
  • Ideally you will have a Degree in Electrical Engineering or Civil Engineering or equivalent all with a Project Management bias
  • Excellent understanding of construction management standard methodology. Knowledge of the NEC contract would be required and an advantage.
  • A safety qualification such as IOSH Leading Safety will be advantageous as will experience of working with the CDM regulations and ISO9001 quality processes
  • Knowledge and experience of Primavera P6, online project collaboration tools, Microsoft Project, the Microsoft Office suite of applications (Excel, Word and Access) and project management techniques
  • A recognised project management qualification/membership for example APM or Chartered status would be an advantage

Safety Health and Environmental Advisor (SHE)

Job Purpose:

The purpose of the role is to give competent health, safety and sustainability advice to advisors, Managers, staff, contractors, clients and the general public to promote the requirements of the health and safety management system. 

The job requires an individual with experience of SHE. The individual will need to be self-motivated and able to work independently, a good communicator with flexibility and an adaptable approach to problem solving is essential.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience:
  • Hold, or be working towards the National Examination Board of Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) Certificate
  • Hold, or be working towards, an IOSH in Managing Your Environmental Responsibilities
  • Have a wide range of work experience which covers the main activities undertaken by staff and contractors working in the UK Power Networks Services Directorate and ideally have or previously have operational competencies
  • The ability to be flexible in their approach to work and be able to prioritise as directed by SHE Lead Advisor

Job Purpose:

Develop the environment and sustainability strategy to achieve UK Power Networks vision to become the most environmentally and socially responsible Distribution Network Operator. Provide advice to the company on environmental issues, ensuring that environmental policies, procedures and guidance are developed governing all activities and assets for UK Power Networks.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Essential Experience and Competencies
  • We ask that you will be IEMA Chartered Environmentalist CEnv (or working towards)
  • Degree qualified (or level 6 equivalent) in environmental science or other relevant subject.
  • You will be in the possession of additional qualifications in environmental management, auditing or sustainability.
  • Awareness of environmental issues in the electricity distribution industry.
  • Build good working relationships across the company to ensure that the highest standards of internal customer service and consultation are achieved and be seen as the point of reference for environmental matters.
  • Manage companywide projects to meet desired environmental goals and also achieve wider business benefit.

Commercial Manager

Job Purpose:

You will lead a team of Commercial Managers. You will ensure a commercial relationship is maintained with the customers, the reporting of contract compliance & performance for inclusion in the Services OPR (Operational Performance Reporting) and promote and support contract growth.

You will report to the Commercial Finance Manager and along with the Estimating Manager and Lead Commercial Manager form the CMT (Commercial Management Team) for the Services commercial function.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience:
  • Commercial expertise
  • Experience with multimillion pound long-term contracts involving PFI / JV Contracts or similar
  • Graduate level education – relevant degree including financial commercial or economics content or equivalent.
  • You will manage professional relationships with both service providers and company partners- including working with executives and other senior managers.
  • A detailed knowledge of Commercial Contracts and Contract drafting skills.

Client Delivery Manager (CDM)

Job Purpose:

The business is going through a growth phase, targeting and winning new work with new clients across England. Excellence in delivery is an essential part of building our brand and reputation with new clients. You will mobilise and build a portfolio of project and maintenance contracts with all clients to achieve this objective.

This is a client-facing role and you will need to provide excellent service to clients, ensuring that all contracts are delivered to time, cost, quality and legislative requirements. You will provide value to the business by ensuring the financial performance of all contracts, delivering contracted works and also developing further opportunities as work progresses. 

Appropriate resources will need to be put in place, using a combination of directly employed staff and subcontract arrangements to meet the requirements of a growing business. We ask that you are highly experienced in project and maintenance environment with power system experience up to and including 132kV and demonstrable experience in managing large diverse teams and complex projects.
