From Royal Navy to Regional Operations Support Manager

Martin's Story
From Royal Navy to Regional Operations Support Manager Martin English began his career at BSS before joining the Royal Navy in 1977. Nine years later, he made a successful return to the company, working his way from the Trade Counter to become Regional Operations Support Manager.

“Between 1977 and 1986, I worked in a number of stores-related roles in the Royal Navy, including Leading Stores Accountant and specialist roles in logistics and fitting-out. I was keen to develop new skills and received a great deal of job-specific and leadership training, as well as serving on vessels all over the world.

Before joining the Royal Navy, I’d worked for BSS and my then-manager was now the manager at BSS Bristol. My brother in law, who works in the industry, was able to put me in touch with him and I was offered a job on the Trade Counter. I was later promoted to Shift Supervisor and then Warehouse Supervisor at BSS Bristol.

Since joining BSS, I’ve gained a huge amount of knowledge in areas such as supply chain, warehouse design, stock disposal and BSS systems. I’ve also transferred what I learnt in the Royal Navy to my roles at BSS, with key skills like organisation, team building and people management really helping me move forward. In 2007, I left BSS Bristol to join a project team working to upgrade the computer systems used throughout BSS Industrial. A year later, I became a Project Manager for the Regional Sales Director before promotion to my current role in 2010.

I can safely say that, as Regional Operations Support Manager, no two days are ever the same!In short, my responsibilities cover anything and everything that’s required to support BSS branches in my region on a daily basis. That includes Health& Safety, logistics, warehousing and transport.

My biggest achievement at BSS to date was developing the cantilever stocking system for linear products in 1995, which is now used throughout the business. There have definitely been some challenges at times, such as motivating staff and creating team spirit, but as I love working with people, I was always pleased to rise to the occasion!

In fact, people are the very reason I wanted to return to BSS in 1986. That and the great career opportunities on offer – my own progression is a good example, not to mention the person who initially employed me and eventually became Managing Director!I would encourage anyone leaving the forces to consider working for BSS. There’s great training opportunities on offer and you’ll have a Personal Development Plan to help you push on and develop the career you want. And don’t forget you’ll also have access to the endless opportunities within the wider Travis Perkins Group.

I believe that the right ex-service people will always bring something extra to roles outside the Forces. So come and join BSS, and bring your skills, experience and knowledge to help further develop our team.”
