The selection process

What is the selection process?

If your CV meets the essential criteria for the role, the first stage of the selection process is typically a telephone interview with one of our Recruitment Delivery Team. At this stage, you will be asked to provide a brief overview of your relevant career history and may be asked for some specific examples relating to the key criteria for the role. In addition, we may explore with you your motivation for the role & enquire regarding your salary expectations, travel arrangements and availability to attend a face-to-face interview. Depending on the role you have applied for, the next stage could involve an assessment centre, psychometric testing or a face-to-face competency based interview with a hiring manager. You will be advised during the process which format to expect and what this will involve for you. Can you give me an idea of what to expect at my interview?

The competency based interview will typically be held at one of our office locations. The hiring manager for the role will conduct the interview, accompanied by one of their colleagues. They will ask a series of questions relevant to the role and are looking for you to provide real examples based around your experience. They may also try to gauge your suitability for the role by asking motivational, technical or scenario based questions. The interviewers will be taking notes during the interview to ensure they capture all of your answers. There will be an opportunity for you to ask questions about the role and the culture of the business at the interview.Competency Based Interviews – how can I structure my answers to give myself the best opportunity?

Competency Based Interviews are a preferred tool as they provide the hiring manager with clear examples of the candidates experience and actions/input in a given area. The below provides a quick guide to help with this:

Remember STAR

S – ituation: Set the context keeping the detail concise & informative – provide some background detail. Why were you in that situation?

T – ask: Describe exactly what was required of you. Had you been asked to deliver a particular piece of work? Did you have a challenging member of staff you were dealing with?

A – ction or Activity: This is the most important section. You need to highlight the skills & personal attributes that the question is testing. Explain what you did, how and why you did it remembering to go into some detail while steering clear of technical information & jargon unless it is absolutely critical to your story. Remember to provide the reasons for your actions.

R – esult: Talk about the outcome and use this opportunity to mention what you learnt from the way you handled the situation.

Psychometric Testing

EDF will use a variety of behavioural or cognitive ability tests working in partnership with CEB [formerly SHL], in order to support the application process. Any tests we ask a candidate to undertake are relevant to the role & help us to evaluate ability within a particular discipline or function.

If you are asked to complete some psychometric testing as part of the selection process you will be e-mailed the details separately. By following the link below, you can view some example questions for a variety of different tests, or complete a full length practice test. http://www.shldirect.com/en/practice-tests/

How should I dress for my interview?
Formal business attire unless otherwise indicated.

Will I get any feedback on my interview if I’m unsuccessful?
Yes - All candidates interviewed will receive verbal feedback irrespective of whether or not they are successful.

Will I have the chance to meet any of my potential colleagues during the selection process?
While some selection processes do involve meeting with potential colleagues, this is not a standard part of the process so can’t be guaranteed.
