1. Take it seriously – impress your interviewer
2. Do your homework – research the company, the job you’ve applied for & be able to talk confidently about your CV and employment/education history
3. Prepare intelligent questions – there will be time allowed so have some to hand
4. Find a quiet room with no distractions
5. Charge your phone – landlines are better but if you have to use a mobile, make sure it’s fully charged & you’re in an area with full network coverage
6. Stand up and smile! You’ll feel more confident during the interview
7. Let your voice be your body language – studies suggest 90% of a message is conveyed in body language so let your voice do this for you; sound upbeat, interested & engaged
8. Don’t ramble – you can’t see any non verbal cues so it can be easy to talk too much. Be aware and keep answers concise and to the point
9. Allow extra time – phone interviews can often go on longer than anticipated – be prepared
10. Take notes – of the Q’s you were asked and answers you gave. It will help you as you move to the next stage of the process
