From Submarine Sonar Operations to Field District Manager

David's story

During his 15 year career with the Royal Navy David experienced a variety of roles: from sonar operations on a submarine to facilitating the delivery of adventure training to 2500 HM Armed Forces personnel annually. His focus on physical exercise has been underpinned by accredited qualifications and through his Royal Navy experience he has gained some transferable skills in coaching, mentoring, projects, supply chain management, budgeting and leadership which have supported his ability to transition into civilian life. Having joined EDF as a Smart Meter Installer (Single Fuel) in 2016, David has quickly furthered his career, first becoming Dual Fuel qualified in February 2017 and more recently taking up the role of Field District Manager. Here he summarises his experience of working as part of the EDF Smart Metering Programme.

How did you become a Smart Metering Installer with EDF?

My wife works for EDF and made me aware of the opportunity. Having recently left HM Armed forces I was attracted to the role because I would be paid while being trained. I applied and went through the recruitment process. The people at the assessment centre were friendly and I enjoyed the breadth of assessment: practical, face-to-face interview and role play.

Can you describe your role in more detail?

Unlike in HM Armed Forces, where you are told about a promotion and it just happens automatically, I’ve had the opportunity at EDF to progress my career by choosing opportunities for promotion. I’m now a Field District Manager and lead a team of up to 15 Smart Meter Installers. The good thing about the role is that it’s based local to home. There is real variety – no two days are the same. Having a van and managing your own work gives is also a benefit.

How has your HM Armed Forces background equipped you to do the role?

Everything about my time in the Royal Navy has equipped me to do the role. The structured approach to training is similar, as is the need to be confident working alone and as part of a team.

What advice would you give service leavers looking to join the Smart Metering Programme?

You are paid well in the forces so don’t be put off by the starting salary. There are opportunities to grow your salary and career as you develop more skills. There are also lots of benefits, being close to home limits the travel requirement and there are options to vary shift patterns. It’s a chance to be part of something new, that’s important for the country. EDF also has a Forces Support Network that you can join to stay connected to those with a similar HM Armed Forces background.
