Ex-Engineering Technician Propulsion to FGD Mechanical Engineer

Mark's Story
Ex-RAF Corporal Mark Craven served for 17 years as an Engineering Technician Propulsion, with his most recent position as a Flight Line Co-ordinator. During his service, Mark gained an ONC Mechanical Engineering qualification and also cites disciple and high standards as two key qualities developed during military service.

As part of his resettlement, Mark completed a 16th Edition electrics qualification (now replaced by the 17th Edition qualification), which he says helped him to get a job within the power industry.

Mark now works as an FGD Mechanical Engineer for EDF, and his role involves managing and maintaining the Flue Gas Desulfurisation section at Cottam Power station, an EDF owned coal-fired power station in Nottinghamshire, which has a generating capacity of 2,000 megawatts. Mark says the military skills he uses on a daily basis in the role include: ‘general engineering acumen, self-discipline, organisational skills and man management.’

Mark’s advice to other Service leavers is: ‘Do your own job searching, and don’t be too nervous about the interview. In many areas, Service personnel can offer much more than their civilian counterparts; you will shine like a star alongside them.’
