From Vehicle Mechanic to Convoy Vehicle Technician

Richard's story
From Vehicle Mechanic to Convoy Vehicle Technician

I have worked at AWE for 2 months so I am fairly new to the organisation. I joined AWE as a Convoy Vehicle Technician after I attended an Open Day. I liked the sound of the high levels of engineering and development that was on offer so that’s what first attracted me to the organisation. Before joining AWE I was in the military for 7 years and was a REME vehicle mechanic.

My job at the moment involves carrying out repairs maintenance and modifications on the AWE’s vehicle fleet. I get to work in a close team and the equipment I get to work on is very diverse.

Working in the military has definitely helped me with my role at AWE. It has given me experience of working in small teams, ensured that I am physically fit, as well as given me experience of working on a huge range of equipment.

The biggest challenge in my role is learning about AWE and learning new skills- there’s a lot to learn!

There are a lot benefits of working at AWE including working in a close team of people as well as the 9 day fortnight which allows an excellent work/life balance. This job is unique just like the Army.

I’m looking forward to developing my skills and qualifications at AWE, hopefully getting experience of other roles in the organisation. I would definitely recommend AWE to someone after completing their military service as it provides exciting opportunities and can act as a ‘half way house’ between the army and civil life.
