Domestic Electrical Installation

20 day contract funded electrical course at RTC Aldershot for those seeking to gain an introduction to domestic installation work in a property or progress towards a full electrical apprenticeship. This may suit service leavers who want to carry out work on their own properties or continue into the electrical industry.

It should be noted that in September 2021 the IET updated the Electrotechnical Assessment Specification on entry requirements to Competent Persons Schemes (NAPIT, ELECSA, NICEIC, Stroma etc). Further training and experience is now required to join one of these schemes. Without joining a CPS scheme, any notifiable* work will need to be certified by either local building control or a registered third party electrician.

* Notifiable Work is classed as;

  • Installation of a new circuit,
  • Changing a Consumer Unit (Fuse Box)
  • Circuit alteration or addition in a special location (Certain zones within a room containing a bath or shower, or a room containing a swimming pool or sauna heater)

If you are carrying out minor works (extensions or alterations on existing circuits) then you will still be allowed to carry on as you are competent to carry out minor works and completion of a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate.

Is this the right course for me?

For those intending to work as Domestic Installers, or start their career in electrical installation, this course offers an excellent foundation to build up your skills and progress onto further qualifications and experience.

Course Content

You will learn the theory behind different electrical circuits found in the home, and how they should be installed and tested.

You will select cable size/type and protective devices as guided by current regulations, and install the circuits in our purpose built workshops to a rig provided.

Inspection and test will then be carried out on each circuit to measure electrical characteristics and prove compliance with regulations. This will also determine if it is safe to put into operation. You will complete Electrical Installation Certificates (EIC) for new work, Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificates for alterations, and Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICR) for those already in use. During the course you will also inspect and test pre-built installations with switchable faults and produce certification for them as you would with a real domestic installation.

Career Opportunities

This course provides the foundation for those wishing to work in the electrical industry but further training will be necessary to self-certify notifiable domestic work, or work unsupervised outside of the domestic environment.

Students are advised that since September 2021 further training and experience is required to join a Competent Persons Scheme (CPS) such as NAPIT, NICIEC, ELECSA, Stroma etc. Joining a CPS scheme will allow you to sign off your own notifiable domestic work.

Attending and successfully completing this course will allow you to attend our City & Guilds 2391-52 stand-alone Level 3 Combined Initial Verification and Periodic Inspection and Testing course.
