Case Study - Don De Jongh

Background

"I joined the Army in 2011 and left in 2023 after serving for 12 years. I initially joined the infantry and was based in various locations around the world from Germany, Canada and back to the UK. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the Army and the experiences it afforded me, however with a young family my focus has shifted, and my priorities changed."

My resettlement journey

"After signing off I attended CTP’s Career Transition Workshop which was a great start to my transition out of the military. The CTW provided great guidance and allowed me to build my transition plan and CV early. A real key to success with regards to transitioning is: “you can never start preparing too early “.

"Once I’d completed my CTW, my focus was drawn to what career I was going to pursue, and I decided I wanted to build on my experience of project management in the military. I have a real interest in technology and the ways we can utilise tech to make our lives more efficient. I completed both Prince2 Practitioner and Agile PM Practitioner through CTP - both useful and very well delivered courses. This was phase 1 of my transition complete.

"I was now in phase 2 of my resettlement where I was focused on networking and job hunting. I applied for various Project Manager roles, and whilst networking I was pointed in the direction of Netcompany and their Service leavers programme. I immediately applied after speaking to some of the veterans within Netcompany, and after a 2-phase interview process I was offered a role as a Senior Infrastructure Consultant.

"Throughout my transition period I had multiple check-ins with my CTP Career Advisor to understand how they could support me. This support they provided played a huge part in me getting the opportunity with NetCompany."

The Service leavers programme (SLP)

"I was the first Service leaver to be enrolled onto the SLP, but could immediately see the hard work and preparation that had been put in to building the programme. I was introduced to the 30 veterans within the wider business and given a mentor, who plays a vital role in everything you do from supporting career development to having a coffee and a catch-up.

"Since joining Netcompany I’ve delivered a variety of different projects from environmental facing projects, all the way through to DevOps optimisation projects. This is one of the benefits of consulting, having the ability to deliver work that utilises different technology stacks and has a noticeable difference in the way a client operates and delivers their business. It also makes an enormous difference when you have a support structure that you can refer to whenever you need, something I’ve used regularly.

"I personally cannot recommend Netcompany and the SLP enough to anyone looking at getting out of the Armed Forces; there is a huge variety of opportunities available."

Closing

"Everyone that joins the Armed Forces must leave at some point, and so preparing as early as possible will allow you to make that transition easier. Utilise all the benefits the military provides such as ELCAS, Standard Learning Credits and access to CTP, to improve yourself.

"There are a lot of Service leavers who’ve already made the transition, so reach out to them and get networking; and use some of their advice to tailor your own journey."
