Tell me about your time in the Royal Navy

“I served as a Communications Information Specialist in the Royal Navy for 28.5 years and thoroughly enjoyed the career it gave me. I enjoyed the comradery and feeling of being part of a team. The variety of roles that you could be placed in to was also a highlight. I realised after a while that I needed to spend more time with my family and this wasn’t something that the Royal Navy could offer me, so it was then that I decided to leave.”

What was your resettlement process with CTP like?

"I attended the Career Transition Workshop (CTW) and appreciated the insight onto how to write a CV; especially the parts which helped translate my Military experience into civilian equivalent language. I also attended the CompTIA A+ four-week course. The exam was held adjacent to the Aldershot Resettlement Centre, so I was able to fit it round my schedule. I found the course extremely well run and the instructor was exceedingly knowledgeable about the subject."

You’ve now transitioned into Civilian life, what do you do?

“I work as a Business Support Administrator for the Metropolitan Police. My role is hugely varied covering Procurement, both acquisition and payment, Recruitment and Resource Management. My ability to work under tight schedules, with the minimum of guidance, as well as my ability to integrate into the team, I would say were paramount in transitioning from Military to Civilian employment."

What advice would you give to other Service leavers?

"The Military Can-Do attitude is a useful experience and cannot be overstated. It is very competitive in civilian employment, however do not under value your military experience."
