Forces: Army
Peter D - SSgt
“Do not wait to look for a job, look early, use all of CTP’s help, and apply for early release if you find a job that suits your needs.”
Background
Peter Denyer left the Army in early 2018, having served for 24 years and reached the rank of Staff Sergent.
During
his time in the Army, Peter worked as a Training Analyst within the
Royal Logistic Corps (RLC) Catering sector, gaining analytical,
organisational, leadership, man management and logistics experience.
Peter also achieved a First Class BA Honours degree in Hospitality and
Enterprise Management and a qualification in PRINCE2.
Resettlement
As
part of his resettlement, Peter attended a CTP Career Transition
Workshop (CTW) at RRC Aldershot and says, “The CTW was really helpful in
providing me with CV writing knowledge and interview preparation.”
Peter
attended a number of one-to-one sessions with his Career Consultant, to
help further work on his CV. Peter comments, “I found the knowledge and
experience they possessed, coupled with the preparation received at my
CTW, gave me a great deal of confidence and allowed me to achieve my
goals.”
Peter took advantage of CTP myPlan and RightJob, where he updated his profile and applied for current job vacancies.
Outcome
It
was by applying for a Training Analyst role on RightJob that he
received an invitation for a job interview with the Reserve Forces’ and
Cadets’ Association (RFCA). He participated via a three man panel
interview, which lasted one hour.
Peter says, “I had to do a
presentation on myself and what I could bring to the role. If I’m
honest, the whole process felt like ten minutes and when the interview
finished I thought I had messed up and finished early. In reality, it
was ten minutes longer than the panel had planned for.”
Peter was offered the role and has been working for the company since February 2018.
Whilst
still in its early days, Peter says he initially faced obstacles
working out what was required of him and how best to work with his new
manager. He goes on to say, “I still work in a military environment
using military systems, but being a civilian means there is a whole new
way of working and new procedures for paperwork – no JPA!”
Peter’s
advice for other Service leavers going through the resettlement process
is: “Do not wait to look for a job, look early, use all of CTP’s help,
and apply for early release if you find a job that suits your needs.”
