"Take every opportunity to learn about roles and to talk to people who work at companies you are interested in. I never thought I’d end up in the financial sector, but the individual transition stories really swung it for me".
Earlier this year, at the end of a 16 year commission, Donna Flannagan decided to leave the Navy to “try a new adventure”.
After
some initial indecision about what she wanted to do, she decided to
join a number of military networks, got herself clued up on LinkedIn and
narrowed her decision down to finding a role in Financial Services.
She attended a Barclays Military Talent Day and heard first-hand how her
skills and experience were valued by Barclays and went on to apply for
the Barclays Military Internship Programme.
Donna was successful
in gaining a place and began her internship on August 2017 working as a
project manager. During this time she identified a permanent role within
the team and was successful in securing the role, which commenced in
November 2017.
Her key reflections on the benefits of the internship are:"It
provides exceptional exposure not just to how the bank works, but the
people within it - and you are encouraged to network to see if you can
find your fit and hopefully secure a permanent position.
"Barclays
has a military network of over 350 people who were invaluable in
helping the interns to adjust to the workplace, and also in providing
ongoing support".
What would Donna say to anyone else going through their transition?"Take
every opportunity to learn about roles and to talk to people who work
at companies you are interested in. I never thought I’d end up in the
financial sector, but the individual transition stories really swung it
for me".
