Alison Hilton, HR Director (Service Delivery), Openreach - Openreach

Alison Hilton speaks about the success of the recent Civilian Work Attachment programme run by Openreach for ex-military personnel...

“In partnership with the Career Transition Partnership over the last two years, Openreach have now hired more than 1,000 ex-military personnel which is a brilliant achievement for everyone. More recently Openreach have also offered Service leavers the unique opportunity to carry out a 3-month Civilian Work Attachment as part of a national Engineering Mobile Workforce, delivering a fibre managed install to residential and business customers.

During the CWA, Openreach provided full training, following a standard Openreach syllabus, and Service leavers gained an IOSH Working Safely Certificate (3 year validity) and a City & Guilds 6156 Unit 002 Signing Lighting & Guarding (5 year validity) as well as a Graduation Certificate detailing what they have achieved overall. Since October 2012, Openreach has offered almost 450 Service leavers the opportunity to carry out a CWA. As part of this proposition, all individuals who complete the CWA are guaranteed an interview for a permanent role with Openreach and are provided with interview coaching. To date a fantastic 92% of those who have carried out a CWA and subsequently attended an interview have been offered employment.

For Openreach the CWA option is an additional path for individuals to consider working with the organisation who may or may not have had previous engineering experience. The CWA provides individuals with the opportunity to learn and try out new skills, and provides Openreach with a rich stream of incoming talent that may not have come to us naturally through the direct hire route.”
